Coneflower is a North American prairie native that thrives on neglect once established, tolerating drought, poor soil, and hot exposed sites that would stress out less rugged perennials. It's also one of the best perennials for supporting winter wildlife, since the seed heads left standing after bloom are a reliable food source for finches and other birds through the colder months.
Planting
- Plant in spring or fall in full sun for the strongest bloom, though coneflower tolerates part shade with somewhat fewer flowers
- Choose average to lean soil — overly rich, heavily amended soil tends to produce floppy, weak-stemmed growth
- Space plants 1.5-2 ft apart to allow for their mature spread and good airflow
- Water regularly through the first growing season while roots establish; established plants need little supplemental watering
Watering & care
- Once established (after the first year), coneflower is genuinely drought-tolerant and rarely needs supplemental watering except in prolonged dry spells
- Avoid heavy fertilizing — coneflower performs best in lean to average soil and can become floppy in overly rich conditions

- Divide in early spring as new growth emerges, or in fall after flowering finishes
- Lift the clump with a garden fork and separate into sections with several healthy shoots and roots each
- Replant divisions promptly at the same depth and water in well
Common problems
- Floppy, weak stems: usually from overly rich soil, too much fertilizer, or too much shade — reduce feeding and ensure full sun
- Aster yellows (stunted, greenish, distorted flowers): a phytoplasma disease spread by leafhoppers — remove and destroy affected plants, as there's no cure
- Japanese beetles skeletonizing leaves and flowers: hand-pick in early morning or use row covers on young plants
- Powdery mildew in humid conditions: improve airflow with adequate spacing and avoid overhead watering late in the day
