Holly's glossy evergreen or semi-evergreen foliage and bright winter berries make it a classic landscape plant, but two details trip up more gardeners than anything else: most hollies need both a male and a female plant to produce berries at all, and winter hardiness varies enormously between species, so a cultivar that thrives in one region can fail entirely in a colder one.
Choosing a species for your zone
- Winter hardiness varies dramatically by species — some hollies are reliable only to zone 7 or warmer, while cold-hardy types and cultivars (such as many winterberry and blue holly selections) handle zone 3-4 winters
- Check the specific hardiness rating of the species and cultivar you're buying rather than assuming all holly is equally cold-tolerant
- In colder regions, deciduous winterberry holly (Ilex verticillata) is often a more reliable choice for berries than evergreen types, since it's bred for cold-climate hardiness
- Choose a site with some shelter from harsh winter wind, which reduces leaf desiccation on evergreen types
