Blueberries have a reputation for being fussy, but almost every struggling blueberry bush traces back to one issue: soil that isn't acidic enough. Most garden and lawn soil sits closer to neutral pH, and blueberries genuinely cannot take up nutrients properly outside a narrow acidic range, no matter how much fertilizer goes down. Get the soil right, and blueberries are otherwise a fairly low-maintenance fruiting shrub.
Soil & pH
- Blueberries need strongly acidic soil, pH 4.5–5.5 — test your soil before planting rather than assuming
- Amend with peat moss, sulphur, or an acidifying fertilizer to lower pH if your soil tests higher, and retest annually
- Mulch with pine needles, bark, or sawdust, which help maintain acidity as they break down
- Plant in well-drained soil — blueberries have shallow, fibrous roots that don't tolerate standing water
Choosing varieties for your zone
- Highbush blueberries (the common garden type) are hardy roughly zones 4–7
- Half-high cultivars, bred by crossing highbush with the wild lowbush type, are hardy to zone 3 and are the better choice for the Prairies and colder regions
- Plant at least two different varieties — most blueberries produce more and larger fruit with cross-pollination, even varieties described as self-fertile
- Choose varieties with staggered ripening times if you want a longer harvest window rather than one big flush
Watering & feeding
- Keep soil consistently moist — the shallow root system dries out faster than most shrubs, especially in the first two years
- Water deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly every day, and increase during fruit development and dry spells
- Feed with an acid-loving-plant or blueberry-specific fertilizer in early spring; avoid high-nitrogen general fertilizers that push leafy growth over fruit
Protecting the harvest & problems
- Bird netting is close to essential — birds will strip a blueberry bush of ripe fruit faster than almost any other garden problem
- Yellowing leaves with green veins (chlorosis): a classic sign the soil pH has drifted too high — retest and re-acidify
- Poor fruit set despite healthy-looking plants: usually a pollination issue from having only one variety — add a second cultivar
- Prune out old, unproductive canes in late winter to encourage vigorous new fruiting wood
