The single most common reason a healthy-looking apple tree never produces fruit is pollination, not disease or poor care — most apple varieties are self-unfruitful and need a different variety blooming nearby at the same time. Beyond that, an apple tree's ultimate size is set almost entirely by its rootstock, which matters more for a home garden than the variety itself when space is limited.
Choosing a variety & planting
- Check the hardiness zone rating on the specific cultivar — apple hardiness varies widely, from zone 3-hardy varieties suited to the Prairies up to zone 8 varieties for milder regions
- Plant in full sun with well-drained soil; poor drainage is a common cause of early tree decline
- Plant at the same depth the tree was growing in its container or nursery row — the graft union (a visible bulge low on the trunk) should stay above soil level
- Stake young trees, especially on dwarfing rootstock, until the root system establishes
Pollination
- Most apple varieties are self-unfruitful and need a different, compatible variety blooming at the same time nearby to set fruit
- A small number of varieties are partially self-fertile, but even these produce more reliably with a second variety present
- A neighbour's or nearby crabapple tree can serve as a pollinator if it blooms at a compatible time, so a lone tree isn't always truly alone
- Choose two varieties with overlapping bloom times — an early and a late bloomer may not pollinate each other well
Rootstock & mature size
- Dwarf rootstock keeps a tree to roughly 2–3 m, ideal for small yards and easy hand-picking, but needs staking long-term and has a shorter lifespan
- Semi-dwarf rootstock produces a 3.5–5 m tree, a common balance of manageable size and vigour for home orchards
- Standard rootstock produces a full-size 6–8 m tree — larger yield eventually, but a much longer wait to bear fruit and harder to manage without a ladder
- The rootstock, not the fruit variety grafted onto it, is what determines the tree's ultimate size
Pruning & common problems
- Prune while dormant in late winter, removing dead, crossing, and inward-growing branches to open the canopy to light and airflow
- Thin excess young fruit in early summer if a tree sets heavily — this improves the size of remaining apples and reduces limb breakage
- Apple maggot and codling moth are common Canadian orchard pests — monitor with sticky traps and consider bagging individual fruit on small trees
- Fire blight (blackened, scorched-looking shoot tips) needs prompt pruning well below the visible damage, sanitizing tools between cuts
