Year-End Tax & Finance Checklist — full sample
This is the actual structure our generator produces from the default answers. When you buy, you fill in the form and your version reflects your household — rooms, timeline, province, and everything else.
November — contribution room
- Log into CRA My Account — check RRSP + TFSA room (both carry forward, so confirm the real number, not an estimate)
- Confirm employer RRSP match maxed for the year — free money left on the table doesn't roll over
- Plan final RRSP contribution (deadline: first 60 days of the following year)
- Plan final TFSA top-up for the calendar year
- Skip RESP — no dependents on this checklist
- FHSA contribution if eligible — check both the annual and lifetime limits before assuming room
December — tax-loss & rebalancing
- Review non-registered accounts for tax-loss selling candidates before markets close for the year
- Watch the 30-day superficial-loss rule if you plan to repurchase anything you sell at a loss
- Rebalance the portfolio to target allocation before year-end
- Confirm charitable donations are processed by Dec 31 and you have the receipts
December — receipts & records
- Gather medical receipts for the family (prescriptions, dental, eyewear, medical travel over 40 km)
- Tuition and T2202 slips collected from every student in the household
- Public-transit, disability, and caregiver receipts if applicable
- Union or professional dues receipts
- Home-office worksheet: count actual work-from-home days for the year, not an estimate
- Interest paid on investment loans, if the loan was used for eligible investments
January — statement season
- T4 from every employer
- T4A for other income or scholarships
- T4A(P) / T4A(OAS) if applicable
- T4E for EI benefits
- T5 from banks (interest, dividends over $50)
- T3 from trusts or mutual funds
- T5008 for security dispositions
- RRSP contribution receipts (the Jan–Feb slip covers the first 60 days of the new year)
- Charitable donation receipts
- Notice of assessment from last year on file, for reference
February — file prep
- Confirm CRA My Account access; enable MFA
- Update address, direct deposit, and marital status if changed (currently: common-law / spouse)
- Add any new dependent to your file
- Auto-fill My Return authorization set up in your tax software
- Compare the tax software's estimate against last year's actual result — a large unexplained swing is worth double-checking before filing
March — file & finalize
- RRSP contribution deadline: first 60 days of the year
- Review the return line-by-line before filing — don't just click through the software's summary screen
- Split pension income with a spouse if eligible
- Claim the spousal or common-law credit correctly if applicable
- File electronically via NETFILE
- Save a PDF copy plus every supporting document for 6 years — CRA can reassess within that window
