Vegan Grocery List Canada

The plant proteins, the B12 plan, and the hidden dairy and gelatin that sneak into packaged food when you're not reading every label.

A vegan grocery list fails one of two ways: it's built around expensive packaged substitutes instead of whole plant foods, or it quietly misses B12 — the one nutrient a fully plant-based diet genuinely can't cover on its own.

What to actually buy

  • Legumes as the protein base — lentils, chickpeas, black beans, both dried and canned
  • Tofu and tempeh for meals that want a meat-like texture
  • A plant milk you actually like drinking, not just cooking with — soy milk has the closest protein profile to dairy
  • Whole grains (rice, oats, quinoa) and a rotating mix of vegetables and fruit
  • Nuts and seeds, especially ground flax or chia for omega-3s

The B12 problem and hidden animal ingredients

B12 exists reliably only in animal foods and fortified products. A B12 supplement or B12-fortified nutritional yeast isn't optional on a fully vegan diet — it's the one gap food choices alone don't close.

  • Check labels for whey, casein, and lactose (hidden dairy) and gelatin (hidden animal collagen) in packaged foods
  • Some wines and beers are filtered with animal products (isinglass, gelatin) — look for a vegan-labelled option if that matters to you
  • "Non-dairy" doesn't legally mean vegan in Canada — some products carrying that label still contain casein

Easy swaps

  • Butter → a neutral plant-based margarine or oil, depending on the recipe
  • Eggs (in baking) → a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flax + 3 tbsp water) or mashed banana
  • Ground meat → lentils or crumbled tempeh in sauces, chili, and tacos
  • Parmesan → nutritional yeast, which also covers part of your B12

Frequently asked questions

B12 is the one that genuinely matters — it's not reliably available from plant foods, so a supplement or B12-fortified food is necessary, not optional. Vitamin D, iodine, and omega-3s are also worth watching depending on your diet and where you live.
