Most rhododendron problems trace back to one thing: planting too deep in soil that isn't acidic enough. Fix that and the rest is easy.

Rhododendrons reward almost nothing about neglect — they need acidic soil, shallow planting, and steady moisture — but once those three conditions are met, they're remarkably low-maintenance for decades. Most of the 'my rhododendron won't bloom' or 'the leaves are yellowing' questions trace back to soil pH or planting depth, both fixable.
Planting
- Plant in spring or fall, never in the heat of summer
- Dig a hole only as deep as the root ball and 2–3x as wide — rhododendrons have shallow, fibrous roots that suffocate if planted too deep
- The top of the root ball should sit slightly above grade, not below it
- Amend heavy clay soil with pine bark fines, peat, or compost to improve drainage and acidity
- Mulch 2–3 inches deep with pine needles or bark, kept a few inches back from the stem
Soil pH and watering
- Test soil pH before planting — rhododendrons need acidic soil (4.5–6.0); alkaline soil causes yellowing between leaf veins (iron chlorosis)
- Lower pH gradually with elemental sulfur or an acidifying fertilizer if a soil test shows it's too high
- Water deeply once or twice a week rather than lightly and often — the goal is consistently moist, never soggy
- Never let a rhododendron dry out completely between waterings, especially in the first two years
Pruning
- Prune right after flowering finishes, not in fall or winter — next year's flower buds form shortly after bloom
- Deadhead spent flower clusters by hand to redirect energy into growth rather than seed production
- Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches any time of year
- Overgrown or leggy plants can be rejuvenated by cutting hard in late winter, though this sacrifices that year's blooms
Common problems
- Yellow leaves with green veins: usually alkaline soil (iron chlorosis) — test and correct pH
- No blooms: often over-fertilizing with high-nitrogen feed, too much shade, or pruning at the wrong time
- Brown, curled leaves in winter: normal cold protection response, not necessarily a problem
- Lace bug damage (stippled, silvery leaves): treat with horticultural oil in spring before eggs hatch
- Root rot in heavy, wet soil: improve drainage — this is the most common cause of rhododendron death
