Back to School Checklist — full sample

This is the actual structure our generator produces from the default answers. When you buy, you fill in the form and your version reflects your household — rooms, timeline, province, and everything else.

4 weeks out — shop the list

  • First day of school in Ontario is Tuesday, September 8, 2026 (the day after Labour Day)
  • Duotangs, pencil crayons, and Hilroy notebooks — use these exact terms, they're what's on every Canadian school supply list
  • Geometry set, metric ruler, and a basic pencil case setup
  • Indoor shoes with non-marking soles — mandatory at almost every Canadian elementary school
  • Backpack and lunch bag that actually fit — try them on loaded before buying, not empty in the store
  • Leakproof water bottle, thermos, and a couple of reusable ice packs
  • Wired headphones if the school issues Chromebooks — most boards don't allow Bluetooth in class
  • Kid #1 — label everything with their name (Mabel's Labels or a plain permanent marker both work)
  • Book kids' eye exams now — covered by Ontario's provincial health plan for kids in most provinces, and easy to forget until report cards flag it
  • Start shifting bedtime 15 minutes earlier every few days so the first week isn't a shock

2 weeks out — clothing & paperwork

  • Outdoor shoes or boots, separate from the indoor pair, plus gym clothes (indoor gym shoes are usually a third pair)
  • A few light layers for changeable September weather, and a jacket that lives in the backpack
  • Skip the spare-clothes bag unless the teacher specifically asks for one
  • Confirm immunization records are up to date with public health — some schools request proof before the first day
  • Update emergency contacts and pickup authorization with the school office
  • Set up School Cash Online (or your board's equivalent) — pizza days, milk programs, and field trips all run through it
  • Confirm the walking route or carpool plan and do a practice run before day one
  • Skip before/after care registration

Week of — set up your home systems

  • Set up a mudroom launch pad: hooks at kid height, one shoe bin per kid
  • Post the family command centre calendar with each kid's schedule and any early-dismissal days
  • Stock a homework station: pencils, erasers, a calculator, a quiet corner
  • Set up a lunch-packing station and pack the night before, not the morning of
  • Pull out or buy an orange shirt for Orange Shirt Day, September 30 — the most forgotten item on every Canadian back-to-school list
  • Book haircuts now, before every salon's back-to-school slots are gone

First week — what to expect

  • Running shoes and a toonie in the backpack for the Terry Fox Run — most schools hold it in September
  • Fill out and return any "All About My Kid" teacher info sheet on day one
  • Confirm the walking route or drop-off actually worked as planned
  • Do a first-week label check — the labels that fall off wash out fastest, and it's easier to relabel now than after something goes missing
  • Kid #1 — confirm which teacher and room they landed in once the school posts it

September watch-list

  • Learn your school's phone policy — Ontario restricts phones during instructional time, and every board has its own storage rule
  • Keep an eye on School Cash Online for pizza day and fundraiser notices
  • Note winter-gear sizes now (snow pants, boots, mitts) even though you won't buy yet — sales start in October and you'll want to move fast
  • Check whether your province exempts or rebates tax on kids' clothing and footwear before a big shopping trip — it varies by province

Nut-free & allergy-aware lunches

  • Check the exact policy — most Canadian schools are nut-free or nut-aware, but some also restrict other common allergens
  • Read labels on packaged snacks; "may contain" warnings usually count as excluded, not just "contains"
  • Have a backup nut-free snack list ready so lunch-packing doesn't stall out some mornings
